Whiskey for my men, and beer for my...lawn?

We bought our house because the house was totally updated and didn't need any work. But I don't think the yard has been taken care of in over a decade. I'm determined to bring my mostly weeds lawn back to life. I read to use beer and ammonia to help perk it up. I tried an ammonia solution on the front yard and it now looks like something out of Ireland and has to be mowed twice a week. I'd call that a success. Now for the beer. What brand do I get? Is my lawn a Budweiser lawn? Coors? or maybe it has expensive taste, Samuel Adams? Do they make generic brand beers? I'm not looking forward to the smell, or to bumping into my bishop while purchasing alcohol, which Murphy's Law states must happen. But I'm eager to see the effects it will have.

I'm really getting into this whole yard care thing. I've ordered my seed and bulb catalogs, consulted with my sister-in-law (an AWESOME gardener who knows her stuff) and started digging out new flower beds. The good news for hubby is that it keeps me from knocking down walls inside the house. Now if I could just find a cheaper, easier way to make tiers from the slope in the backyard...I gotta admit though, I'm looking forward to playing with a bobcat :) (not the animal. This one)

  1. I'm buying vodka when I get home so I can make perfume, but I've been worrying about the same thing. Someone from my ward is totally going to see me coming out of the liquor store with it.

  2. Are you serious? I need more details about the ammonia and the beer! Our back yard is hopeless, and we've spent SO MUCH MONEY on professionals to come and fertilize and what not, and nothing is working. We chatted about it with the previous owners (since we're friends, long story), and they used to water it by hand every night, yes, with just the hose! Um yeah, we're not going to do that, thanks.

  3. I am so impressed with you right now. Good job on the lawn! You'll need to post pictures when you're finished with your project.

  4. I've had some inquiries, so I'm gonna post my new lawn care regimen and say what does and doesn't work. This fall I plan to: dethatch, aerate, and reseed. I'm gonna wait til next spring for weed control at the recommendation of some lawn care guys I talked to. It's better to get it thick and healthy and then get the weeds in spring. By the way, never water your lawn at night, it's an open invitation for problems. I've talked with 3 people so far who have diseased lawns and they all water in the middle of the night. 6-10am is the best time to water.

  5. My mom used to use beer on roses or something? Anyway, she was so afraid to buy it at Walmart because someone might see her she sent our Less active best friend to buy it for her. It always cracked me up.
